چکیده

Capillary columns packed electrokinetically with 1.5-μm nonporous octadecylsilica particles are used to achieve rapid separations with high efficiencies. A mixture containing five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as test compounds is separated in less than 5 s with 28 kV applied to a column with a packed length of 6.5 cm (10 cm total length). A sample containing 16 PAHs (classified as priority pollutants by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) is isocratically separated in under 10 min by using longer columns (15-30 cm). Separation efficiencies greater than 700 000 theoretical plates/m are obtained when detection (via UV-excited laser-induced fluorescence) is performed on the packed portion of the capillary. The outlet frit is observed to play an important role in determining column efficiency. The optimum flow rate for best separation efficiency occurs at ∼2 mm/s. The run-to-run reproducibility of the peak retention times on a single column is better than 1% (relative standard deviation).

Fritless packed columns with great potential for use in capillary Electrochromatography

T he past several years have seen a significant resurgence of interest in cap i l l a ry electro ch ro m at ography(CEC), a hybrid technique that combines the high efficiency owing to the flow characteristics related to electroosmosis with the selectivity of high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). In CEC, separations are generally carried out using fused silica capillaries packed with HPL...

Coupling capillary electrochromatography with electrospray Fourier transform mass spectrometry for characterizing complex oligosaccharide pools.

To deal with the complexity of the glycan mixtures released from glycoproteins, an efficient form of micro-column separations, capillary electrochromatography, has been combined with high-performance mass spectrometry (Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance). Contour plots have been generated from the mixtures of O-linked oligosaccharides originated from bovine mucin and bile salt-stimulated...

A simple procedure for the preparation of fritless columns by entrapping conventional high performance liquid chromatography sorbents.

A rapid and direct method for immobilizing conventional high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) packing material inside fritless capillaries has been developed. Due to the simple composition of the entrapment matrix (tetraethoxysilane, alkyltriethoxysilane, ethanol and water), straightforward manufacturing procedure and modest equipment requirement, the method can readily be transferred t...

Capillary Electrochromatography: Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Electrochromatography is utilized to separate a mixture of 16 different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Fused-silica capillary columns ranging in size from 50 to 150 pm i.d. were packed (20-40-cm sections) with 3-pm octadecylsilica particles. A potential of 15-30 kV is applied across the 30-50-cm total length capillary column to generate electroosmotic flow that carries the PAHs throug...

Polar stationary phases for capillary electrochromatography.

This review article summarizes the variety of polar stationary phases that have been employed for capillary electrochromatographic separations. Compared with reversed-phase stationary phases, the polar alternatives provide a completely different retention selectivity towards polar and charged analytes. Different types of polar stationary phases are reviewed, including the possible retention mec...
